We recorded these sounds at Rungan Landscape, located around 160 km northwest of Palangkaraya in the catchment of the Kahayan and Rungan Rivers, and guarded by the Ngaju Dayak community.

Rungan is also a permanent research base established by Borneo Nature Foundation in partnership with the University Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya (UMP), and with the support of local government and communities.

When you are listening to the sounds of Rungan landscape in the morning, with the sunset and with the temperature increasing, the day cicadas/crickets start to vocalize. Did you know that the bird songs you are hearing is quite different from what birds hear? Birds are able to pick up subtleties and shifts in energy that the human ear often misses. From what is known, when a bird listens to a bird’s melody, it experiences the rich nuances and inner qualities of each note in a way that is beyond the capacity of human auditory perception.

This means that the bird song you are hearing now is probably a simplification of a much more complex bird song. We humans can only imagine, but we will never know what it sounds like to another bird’s ear!
