field trips

A current research project “reflections on the history of sound and listening” (working title) is underway in which we are visting two times the Taboyan Dayak communities of the village Desa Berong and their forests at Gunung Purei, North Barito in Central Kalimantan.

During these field trips in August 2024 and May 2025, we make several 24-hour long sound recordings of the forest. Through conversations with the communities we collect knowledge about ancestral practices, connected to the forested land and in relation to its sounds. The process of will be shared with the public through sound walks and community based events in Palangkaraya/Central Kalimantan and Jakarta.

“Reflections on the history of sound and listening” is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany as part of the cultural preservation program.
