sound walks

In May 2025, we launched our first sound walk at the big roundabout in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan. What began as a single listening route has since expanded to Lapangan Jakarta and City Park Telawang, transforming public spaces into portals for listening to the living forests of Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo).

Each sound walk invites visitors to tune in to 24-hour recordings from three forest sites — the Ulin/Tabalien Forest in Gunung Mas, the Rungan Customary Forest (KHDTK) in Mungku Baru, and the Mount Lumut Customary Forest near Berong village in North Barito Ulu.

Through fourteen listening points, accessed via QR codes, participants encounter distinct moments in the forests’ daily rhythm — from pre-dawn choruses to the hush of midnight. Short accompanying texts share reflections on listening, local species, and the acoustic character of each forest site.

As part of the launch, we presented a live sound installation at the Palangkaraya roundabout. Over one weekend, real-time sounds from the Ulin Forest filled the city center — an immersive reminder of the sonic richness of forests now under threat.

This project was created in close collaboration with the Dayak Ngaju communities of Parempai and Bereng Malaka, and the Taboyan community in Berong village. The artists of Points of Listening acknowledge the forest and its sounding creatures as the primary creators of these bioacoustic recordings.
